Herman Trend Alert: Our Growing Global Workforce

March 15th, 2010

Fortunately, CEOs around the world do not share the waffling confidence among consumers in the United States. Of the 1,100 executives from 52 countries polled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for their 13th annual “Global CEO Survey”, almost 40% expect to add people in 2010. Only 25% expect further reductions in force.

In Brazil, a full 60% plan to increase their head counts, while in the Asia Pacific region and in Canada, about half of CEOs anticipate doing so. Only 39% of US CEOs expect to add staff; most (almost two-thirds) will increase modestly (5% or less).

The most encouraging statistic is that worldwide, 81% of CEOs are confident of their 2010 prospects (up from 64%) and only 18% remain pessimistic (down from 35%). Moreover, 31% of responding CEOs reported feeling “very confident” of their short-term prospects—an increase of 10 percentage points from 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

Herman Trend Alert:
The Approaching Senior Surge
________________________________________
In our book “Impending Crisis: Too Many Jobs, Too Few People”, we talked about the senior boom that would drive the economy. Beginning in 2012, the Baby Boomers (born 1946 to 1964), 76.4 million strong, are approaching their 65th birthdays. As their saving-minded parents, pass away, they will inherit billions of dollars.

In fact, according to a report from the McKinsey Global Institute, maturing Boomers will be the most affluent demographic segment in recorded history. McKinsey believes their money will represent 40 percent of all of the transactions in the United States in the next decade. Imagine the political clout they will have!

At this point in time with our contracted economy, Baby Boomers are spending less and saving more. When the recovery gets here and their investment portfolios return to reasonable levels, we will see a significant release of these funds. Some marketers are forecasting significant shortages of computers and automobiles, due to reductions in capacity.

Before the current downturn, we had seen record interest among seniors in “re-careering” to lower-paid less-stressful jobs. For now, we are seeing them choosing to stay in their current position as long as possible. Wise companies are looking for ways to capitalize on this valuable population segment without alienating the Generation Xers who want to move up. Once this recession is history, expect to see a return to previous attitudes and actions.

By the year 2030, more than one-fifth of the US population will be over the age of 65. They represent a phenomenal opportunity to marketers well-positioned to sell them goods and services. Besides the obvious healthcare needs, the affordable housing industry will be the beneficiary of this aging Boomer market as will a wide range of other service suppliers. Affluent seniors will be in the market to buy numerous services to handle tasks they simply do not want to do themselves, including running errands, food shopping, and cooking.

The national and local opportunities presented by this Senior Surge are unprecedented. Enlightened marketers are already preparing to address the wants and needs of this lucrative group and positioning themselves for success with this growing market segment.

Herman Trend Alert:
Highest Paid Jobs for Fresh Grads
________________________________________

College students: Want the highest starting salary in this economy? Study engineering. According to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), engineers earn the best starting salaries. NACEs Summer 2009 Salary Survey shows that four of the five highest starting salaries went to occupations involving engineering.

The Law of Supply and Demand is alive and well in the global labor market. In our audiences around the world the oil and gas producers complain that petroleum engineers are in high demand, often being poached for salaries up to seven times what they are earning in their home countries. Marilyn Mackes NACE executive director confirms, “Even in a tight job market, there are simply more opportunities requiring an engineering degree than graduates available to fill those positions. That drives salaries up.”

In fact, as reported in the Digest of Education Statistics 2008 from the National Center for Education Statistics, out of the more than 1,524,000 bachelors degrees awarded in 2007 (the latest data available), just 450 were in petroleum engineering and only 4,492 were in chemical engineering.

To bring the United States’ competitive position into focus, according to an article published in “Business Week” Magazine in December 2005, looking exclusively at four-year degrees, the US graduated 137,437 engineers, versus 112,000 from India and 351,537 from China, though the latter were reported under a “broader category”.

The NACE study reported the average starting salaries: Petroleum Engineers are the highest paid graduates at USD$83,121, followed by Chemical Engineers at USD $64,902; Mining Engineers are close behind at USD $64,404. Coming fourth and fifth are Computer Engineers at USD $61,738 and Computer Science graduates (in general) at USD $61,407.

Until the US wakes up to the urgent need to support the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects, it will continue to operate at a disadvantage on the world stage. An important part of earning the Employer of Choice Award is to support programs that grow the next generation of workers. Wise employers, especially those that benefit from these graduates, will put increasing energy towards encouraging young people to go into these lucrative professions.
